The High Cost of Krav Maga in Utah

I’ve recently began learning Krav Maga through the University of Utah’s continuing education program. This class is designed to teach the basics of Krav Maga, and is a really good starting point for anyone interested in learning Krav Maga. I really enjoy the instructor who teaches the class, and wouldn’t mind continuing learning Krav Maga outside of the Universities continuing education program (The instructor is affiliated with the Krav Maga Federation). The problem is the cost to continuing training is outrageous in my opinion. The instructor charges $15 per lesson with a discount of $135 for purchasing ten lessons at once. There are three lessons a week, so if you train three times a week, a month of training would cost you $165. Even if you only trained once a week it still would cost $54 a month assuming you were getting the discounted lessons. The Instructor also teaches specialized seminars and workshops on techniques that are necessary for rank advancement. I know seminars and workshops are pretty common throughout different marial arts, and provide excellent focused training on a particular set of techniques, but the additional cost can add up quickly to the already outrageous cost of monthly lessons. Take that along with the belt testing fees, (I know, I know part of the fee covers the belt) learning Krav Maga in Utah can be very expensive. I’ve been looking at other schools in the Salt Lake Valley that offer Krav Maga, but they tend to be in the upper 80′s and are quite the distance from my home. It’s just not worth my time to travel south past the University of Utah. So I’ll be on the search for a new marial art in the near future.

I’m assuming that you’ve looked at Paul Evans Martial Arts. They have an excellent Krav Maga program. Probably the best in Utah. It’s over on Ft. Union Blvd, though.

The cost is quite reasonable compared to what you’ve described. Perhaps it may make it worth it to travel a bit. I do understand the traveling though; I drive from South Mountain 3-4 times per week.

The thing that I like about Paul Evans is that you pay a monthly fee and you can come as many times as you want to as many different classes as you want. Along with the Krav Maga, they also have a BJJ program, and fight/mma classes every Friday. It’s all available for the flat fee.

    Anyway, good luck.
